About

Meet Alex & Doug

We’re Alex Slive and Doug Hanna, life-long business partners, and friends.

In 1979 we co-founded S+H Construction, and for 40 years we built and renovated thousands of homes in Cambridge and the Greater Boston area, garnering a reputation for producing exceptional work and customer service. We also became experts in historic renovations due to the geographic area in which we worked.

S+H Construction was awarded over 25 industry awards and recognitions during our time, including being named “Best of Boston” by Boston Magazine eight times. In 2013, S+H was named “Builder of the Year” by the Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Boston (BRAGB,) and in 2016, we were named “Mentors of the Year” by Design New England Magazine. See a full list of awards here.

We officially retired from S+H in 2019, leaving the award-winning company and its 60+ employees in the capable hands of the new owner and long-time project manager, Sarah Lawson.

We have always found that helping people make informed decisions about their homes and possible renovations to be one of the most satisfying parts of our jobs. It’s been a natural transition to shift from being one of the Boston area’s best-known builders to creating a business sharing the knowledge that we have accumulated over the years. Whether it is a specific building issue or advice about renovating or new construction, Slive and Hanna are available to help.

We know that renovation and construction can seem daunting to those who have never been through the process before, or those who may have had a bad experience in the past, which is why having a measured, objective construction expert as an advisor can be a real advantage. We can also offer advice on specific building and construction issues.

A lifelong Cambridge resident, Alex graduated from Cambridge & Latin High School and received a Political Science degree from UMass Boston.

He is passionate about the building process-having been involved in thousands of projects from porch repairs to building multi-million-dollar homes-and understands the importance of getting it right every step of the way. He specializes in residential construction, but also has experience in institutional, commercial, and charitable work.

Alex currently lives in Cambridgeport with wife, Kaela, and is the father of three daughters with two beautiful grandchildren. He enjoys the outdoors in all seasons, is passionate about chess, and like Doug, loves carpentry.

Born and raised in Medford, Doug moved to Cambridge at age 13. He attended Cambridge High and Latin School and U Mass Boston.

In addition to his 40 years at S+H, Doug has served on the boards of Cambridge Youth Hockey and CHAF (Cambridge Housing Assistance Fund) as well as the Government Affairs Committee of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce. He currently serves as vice-president on the Cambridge Historical Society council and is a corporator at The Cambridge Homes.

In 2018 Doug became a licensed real estate agent at Coldwell Banker in Cambridge.

Doug lives in Cambridge with his wife, Carol. Between them, they are the parents of six children and have four grandchildren. When he has some time to himself, Doug enjoys carpentry projects for friends and family, playing the guitar, and mountain biking.

The Work Speaks for Itself

Doug and Alex oversaw, supervised, and swung hammers on hundreds of projects, big and small, during their four decades at S+H Construction. Here is just a small sampling of their work.
